While driving under a traffic light turning yellow the other day, I was reminded of a story that involved Dolores. Around the time this photograph was taken in Myrtle Beach, North Carolina, Dolores “Cousin Dolly,” right, and her mother Angela “Aunt Marie,” second from left, came up from Florida to visit Aunt Marie’s younger twin sisters Anne “Aunt Fifi,” left, and Laura “Aunt Loll,” third from left, at their summer rental in Seaside Park, New Jersey. Aunt Loll’s husband Dominic “Uncle Dom” squired these lovely ladies up the Garden State Parkway to visit the three sisters’ baby brother Kevin, his wife Marie and their two teenage sons, me and my younger brother Keith, in our family home in Scotch Plains.
After a daylong barbecue that amounted to a family reunion of sorts, Aunt Loll asked me and my brother to return to the Jersey Shore with them that evening to share a few days at the beach. Keith and I jumped at the chance.
Sitting cheek to cheek with Aunt Marie and Cousin Dolly in the backseat of Uncle Dom’s late 1970’s burgundy Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with its white landau roof and opera window, my chatterbox of a brother made the trip go quickly by regaling us with stories of his junior high school adventures while I chimed in with color commentary. It seemed we were down the Shore in no time at all. This was also due in large part to the fact that Uncle Dom had something of a lead foot when he drove. When approaching a traffic light turning yellow, Uncle Dom floored the gas pedal instead of hitting the brakes, the first time during which my brother blurted out with feigned nausea: “Pepto-Bismol time!,” which caused us all to erupt in laughter. From that day on, the words “Pepto-Bismol time!” became a code phrase between me and my brother for any troublesome situation.
I laughed out loud the other day as I passed under that yellow traffic light, fondly recalling my first “Pepto-Bismol time!” during that joyous ride with Dolly and my other family members, all of whom have gone on before me. And it got me to thinking: does heaven have traffic lights?

As others will attest, once you granted Dolly a favor, that task became yours in perpetuity. And honorably so.
Years ago, my father, Uncle Kevin to Dolly, asked me to send my cousin an electric tea kettle after speaking of its convenience during one of his and Dolly's nightly telephone conversations. From then on, I was Dolly’s supplier of electric tea kettles. Now, Dolly did not ask for a new kettle all that often; however, when the latest one went on the fritz, I got a telephone call. Posthaste, I had a replacement on its way to Dolly because I knew how much she relied on this handy appliance. It was a simple task, really.
My go-to kettle for Dolly was small and shatterproof, with quick heat and boil-dry protection- all the conveniences. And always white. Except for the last one, which, perhaps fittingly, was in Dolly's favorite color: pink. With me in New Jersey and Dolly in Florida, we never got the chance to share a cup of a tea made with piping hot water from one of the several tea kettles. Perhaps someday when we're gathered with loved ones on the other side...
Dolly, put the kettle on.
Dolly, put the kettle on.
Dolly, put the kettle on;
we'll all have tea.
